Makeup Looks For Darker Skin Tones

When I do makeup looks, I get feedback from my darker skin toned viewers that say "that looks good on you, but I can't wear those colors."  As a makeup artist, I want you to know that dark skin tones can wear pretty much any color!  You have to experiment and see what shade of each color looks good on your complexion.  Don't be afraid of color.  Play with it, experiment with it, and as I like to say "use color as your weapon!"

A few photos of some darker toned ladies rockin' color like nobody's business!

Skincare: Home RemediesTo Treat Acne During Winter Months

Is the winter air causing your acne to flare up?  The constant change in climate from being in the dry air of our heated homes and then outside in the cold air can aggravate the skin of those that are prone to acne.  Here are few money saving home remedies that you can try.

Whip Out The Humidifier/Vaporizer
Using a humidifier for a couple of hours each day can increase the moisture content in the air and help to keep your skin hydrated.

Change Your Cleanser
Some cleansers can be very drying, especially if they contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.   Try using a milder cleanser.  Neutrogena, Dove and one of my favorites, Aveeno, have mildly formulated cleansers that are gentle but still effective with for treatment and prevention of breakouts.

Cut Back On The Astringents
Astringents are great for removing excess oils.  When used excessively, they can over-dry your skin.  They are meant to be used sparsely and ideally, you should be using them on the affected area only.   Due to it's drying properties, try to use your astringent every other day.  Try alternating with witch hazel. which can be found at almost any local drugstore, Target or Walmart.

Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize
I know you probably think that moisturizing means to add oil to your skin which is what got you into this problem in the first place.  The truth is, all skin types need to moisturizing on a regular bases.  There are plenty of oil free moisturizers on the market and you will have to experiment with a few to see what works for you. Again,  I will have to recommend the Aveeno brand.  I have extremely sensitive skin.  I use my Aveeno moisturizer twice a day every single day and I have no reaction to it.  In fact, my skin is in better condition that it has been in years.

Drink Plenty Of Water And Exercise
I know you probably hear this all the time, but it really is true. Drinking water and green tea can help you to cleanse toxic impurities from your skin. A healthy exercise regimens that produces some sweat isn't a bad idea either.  When you sweat you get rid of impurities as well.

- The following is my personal skin regimen.  I sometimes use different products and change it up a bit, but this is my basic routine.  This may or may not work for you, but it gives you an idea of something you can try.

Night
Wash with Ambi cleanser bar
While my face is still damp I apply Aveeno Daily moisturizer

Morning
Wash face using a face towel and warm water
Apply Aveeno Daily moisturizer

If  I notice that my skin is unusually oil, I use Clean and Clear astringent.  I exfoliate weekly using my regular cleanser with a facial buffing pad and I do a clay mud mask using Aztec Betonite clay once a week (when I remember).

*Tip: Adopt a regular cleansing regimen with minimal products.  Healthy skin isn't about lathering on tons of products to get the benefits of it's promises. It's really about paying attention to your skin and finding out what is the cause behind your breakouts and treating the problem. Find out what triggers your acne. Whether it be stress, diet, air pollutants, hormonal or climate changes, and try to mitigate what's triggering it.  If you're at your wit's end with your acne and nothing seems to work, contact your doctor or dermatologist for help.

Makeup Look For Eyeglasses: Add Some Sparkle To Your Eyes

Fabulous Four Eyes

This makeup look works really well if you wear glasses.  Try wearing eyes colors other than black to give your eyes behind the glass some sparkle.

What I used:

Eyes: NYC mascara - Cobalt blueWetnwild eyeliner - Silver

Cheeks: MAC - Dollymix (bubblegum pink)

Lips: MAC -Ravishing (pinkish peach color)

This was so easy to do.  I coated my lashes(top and bottom) with 3 coats of the cobalt blue mascara.  I then smudged a bit of black eyeliner into the top lashes.  I lined my water line with silver eyeliner and that is it for the eyes. I popped a little blush onto the apples of my cheeks and applied my lipstick.

I hardly smile for any photos so this is a rare moment in which my pearly whites will be making an appearance :)

All About Hair: Meet Felicia Leatherwood;Natural Hair Stylist Extraordinaire!

Loving Your Hair With Natural Care

This young lady is none other than Felicia Leatherwood, hair stylist to celebrity clients Jill Scott, Sanaa Lathan, Will Smith, Terrence Howard, Anthony Anderson and Arsenio Hall, to name a few.  Her work can be found in People magazine, Essence, and Instyle and a host of other film and television appearances.  Although these accomplishments are truly impressive, what's even more impressive is Felicia's genuine care and dedication to her craft and her clients.

I found Felicia through one of her "Loving Your Hair With Natural Haircare" workshops.  I stumbled upon her information while scouring the web to find help for my super dry tresses.  Upon finding her, I did a little googling to get some background information.  As I read her background info and learned of her celebrity clientele and of her press publishings,  I have to admit that I hesitantly signed up for her online workshop. If you're wondering why I say "hesitantly", it's because although I knew the workshop would be informative, I felt as though someone of her notability probably wouldn't be concerned with my insignificant "dry hair" problem.  Boy was I wrong!  Not only did Felicia show a real concern for my hair issues, she was very kind and informative.  I felt like I was talking to one of my longtime girlfriends.  As if that wasn't enough, the information and product recommendations I left her workshop with, has literally saved me hundreds of dollars.

Some people are fortunate enough to find work doing something they truly enjoy which is Felicia's case.  Her stated mission in her own words is to "empower women around the world to love their hair naturally."  This statement is so powerful, because loving your hair naturally is so much more than just loving your hair.  It's loving yourself, inside and out, and for who you are.  Thank you Ms. Leatherwood!

If you'd like to learn more about the works of Ms. Felicia Leatherwood and about upcoming events and workshops that you can attend, check her out on her website www.lovingyourhairwithnaturalcare.com   I recommend that you sign up for her next workshop ASAP!

I am fascinated and inspired by fashion and style of the 1920's.  I am especially inspired some of hairstyles, such as pin-curls, deep waves and oversized hair accessories.  There's something extremely flirty and feminine about these styles paired with red lips.  I will definitely be rocking one or two of these styles!  What do you think?

DIY Chic Manicure: Yet Another DIY French Manicure Twist

What I used:
Icing - Bad Romance     Kiss - Black

I love simple nail designs.  They are easy to do and can look very chic.  My favorite style to play on is the french manicure.  This is an updated and chic version of the classic french manicure.  I used a darker base color and opted for a black tip rather than a white one.  You can try different colors and see what you come up with. I thought these two colors would work well with almost any type of fabric or design I choose to wear.
